Numbers That Know You
A 4,000-year journey from a river tortoise shell — and a complete guide to how this system calculates and reads your life
It Began With a Tortoise
Around 2,000 BCE, Emperor Yu the Great was battling endless floods on the Yellow River. Then, a tortoise emerged from the Lo River carrying a strange pattern on its shell — nine numbers arranged in a 3×3 grid, where every row, column, and diagonal summed to exactly 15. No number repeated. Nothing was missing. Perfectly balanced.
Emperor Yu used this grid to divide his kingdom into nine regions, each governed by the energy of its number. The Lo Shu became the mathematical spine of Chinese civilisation — feng shui, traditional medicine, military strategy, calendar systems — all trace back to that one tortoise shell.
How ShuYi Was Born
In modern Singapore and Malaysia, Dr Lin Zhunwei 林准祎博士 saw a problem: the profound wisdom of Yi Jing and Lo Shu was locked behind complexity — requiring years of study or expensive consultations. Most people would never have access to it.
In 2007 he published 《数字能量学》 and founded ShuYi Academy. His breakthrough: every person's date of birth, broken into individual digits, already encodes the same Lo Shu energy map. No diviner needed, no complex ritual — just your date of birth and a precise mathematical formula.
"数字能量让大家认清自己，调整自己，改变命运。"
Numerology lets everyone know themselves, adjust themselves, and transform their destiny. — Dr Lin Zhunwei
The ShuYi system extracts 8 raw digits from your date of birth, then applies a precise triangular calculation to produce 16 unique life nodes (A through P), plus a hidden subconscious node (QRS) — forming a 13-category map of your career, relationships, wealth, health, and destiny.
ShuYi vs BaZi — Two Maps, Different Questions
ShuYi is your character manual — it tells you who you are.
BaZi is your timing calendar — it tells you when to move.
| ShuYi 数引 | BaZi 八字 | |
|---|---|---|
| What you need | Date of birth only | Exact date + time + birthplace |
| Core question | Who am I? How do I relate? | What cycle am I in? When to act? |
| What it reveals | Character, strengths, relationship patterns, life themes | 10-year luck cycles, annual fortune, career & wealth timing |
| Time to read | 5 minutes, self-readable | 1–2 hours with a practitioner |
| Root system | Lo Shu grid, numbers 1–9 | 10 Heavenly Stems + 12 Earthly Branches |
| Best for | Self-understanding, relationships, compatibility | Career timing, investment windows, life cycle planning |
This confuses almost everyone at first. Both systems use Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water — but they assign them in completely different ways, because they measure completely different things.
In BaZi, your element comes from the Heavenly Stems of the Ganzhi calendar. Birth year 1990 is Geng Wu — a Metal year. More importantly, the Heavenly Stem of your birth day (the Day Master) determines your core self-element. This is why BaZi needs your exact birth time. BaZi elements describe your relationship to external fate cycles — which energies nourish you, drain you, or unlock your potential across the decades.
In ShuYi, elements come from He Tu pairing: 1&6=Metal, 2&7=Water, 3&8=Fire, 4&9=Wood, 5=Earth alone. Your birth date digits reveal which elemental energies are present, missing, or overrepresented in your personality — not one birth-year element, but a complete elemental fingerprint of who you are.
BaZi elements = your relationship with time and fate cycles.
ShuYi elements = your inner character composition.
A person born in a Metal year (BaZi) may have a chart full of Water and Wood in ShuYi. Both are true simultaneously — they simply measure different dimensions of the same person.
The two systems are complementary, not competing. Many practitioners use ShuYi first to understand character, then BaZi to advise on timing. Together they form the most complete picture possible.
The Triangle Formula — How a Birthdate Becomes a Life Map
Split your birthdate DD/MM/CCYY into individual digits. Example: 15 March 1988 = 15/03/19/88:
Each group is digit-summed and reduced to a single digit 1–9. If the sum is ≥ 10, keep reducing.
Foundation nodes are combined in pairs, layer by layer, converging downward into an inverted triangle. G is the lowest point — your Life Number.
From the core triangle, further nodes are derived: H·I·J (life journeys), K·L·M (career branch), N·O·P (marriage/wealth branch), plus special node QRS (hidden subconscious) and Destined Dream = A+E+G.
Each category is three nodes combined into a 3-digit code (e.g. ABC = A-value·B-value·C-value). The resulting number is then interpreted via the ShuYi energy library.
Special Rules — The 11 PM Rule & Twins
In the traditional Chinese calendar, Hài Shí (亥时, 11 PM to 1 AM) marks the energetic beginning of the next day. Therefore, if you were born at 11:00 PM (23:00) or later, the system automatically advances your date by one day before calculating.
If you are unsure of your birth time, leave it blank. The system defaults to the raw birthdate. Enter the time later for a more precise reading.
Twins born on the same date would produce identical charts if calculated normally — yet twins often have very different personalities. ShuYi discovers that twins receive energy from a parent: the older twin (born first) receives energy from the Father, and the younger twin (born second) from the Mother.
This is why twins born on the same day can have very different personalities, Five Elements balance and life paths. In the calculator, select "Twin — Older" or "Twin — Younger" and enter the corresponding parent's DOB.
The Nine Number Archetypes
Every node in your chart (A, B, C, G, etc.) is a number from 1–9, each carrying a unique Five Elements attribute, personality archetype, and energy pattern.
Five Elements — Life's Operating System
ShuYi maps all nine digits into Five Elements using He Tu pairing — numbers that differ by 5 belong to the same element (1&6=Metal, 2&7=Water, 3&8=Fire, 4&9=Wood). The number 5 stands alone at the centre as Earth.
In the Five Elements analysis, the five elements are ordered by the element that contains your G (Life Number), forming a fixed sequence that reveals energy relationships across all dimensions of life.
In the Five Elements view, the count of each element shows your current energy strength in that dimension. A missing element means that dimension needs balancing through feng shui adjustments or intentional action.
Three Reports — Three Ways to Read Your Life
The Architects report focuses on your Core chart, displaying the pyramid structure with detailed breakdowns of your Father Gene (ABC), Mother Gene (DEF), Self Character (CFG), Life Journeys (CGH / FGI), and all 13 categories. Perfect for those who want to understand their deepest driving forces.
The 13 Life Chart presents all 13 categories in a table — number codes, Five Elements, energy levels, and keywords — switchable across Core, Yearly, Monthly, and Daily dimensions. The most efficient "see everything at once" overview.
The Five Elements Decode counts all 16 nodes (A–P) and maps each to Metal, Water, Fire, Wood, or Earth. It shows your current energy strength across wealth, career, health, and relationships via the Five Element relationship cycle — and provides feng shui remedies for any absent element.
💡 Tip: Use Core to understand who you are. Use Yearly to set big annual goals. Use Monthly to plan actions. Use Daily to focus your day.
